Take Part in Wade House Hearthside Dinners
On several Saturdays this fall and winter Wade House, the Wisconsin Historical Society's historic stagecoach inn in Greenbush, will bustle with activity amid the pleasant aromas of a home-cooked meal — and you can be part of the homey, 19th-century-style experience. Two Hearthside Dinners are scheduled this fall — on Saturday, October 31 and November 7. And more Hearthside Dinners are scheduled throughout the winter months — one each month, January through April. View the Wade House calendar of events for complete details. Guests can anticipate a savory repast of a bygone era, prepared in the kitchen of the stagecoach inn that once catered to hungry travelers who traversed the plank road that passed in front of the inn, connecting the cities of Sheboygan and Fond du Lac.
Dinner Guests Involved in the Meal from Start to Finish
Hearthside Dinner guests are collegial participants in a special four-hour food preparation and dining program, living the history of the 1860s as they work together to prepare a mid-day meal. The sights, sounds and smells of the 19th century come to life as stove and fireplace fires are lit and guests chop, stir, season and roast, preparing their dinner as Mrs. Wade did for stagecoach travelers more than a century and a half ago.
After the many preparations are completed, participants will be seated in the Wade House dining room to enjoy the fruits of their labors: a delectably abundant feast of squash soup, pork loin roast, red cabbage with apples, mashed turnips, glazed carrots, cranberry muffins, bread pudding, cider cake, apple cider and coffee. This satisfying encounter with central Wisconsin's past concludes with everyone pitching in to clear the table, wash the dishes (19th-century style), and sweep the hearth.
Reserve a spot today. The cost is $45 per person. Space is limited to a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 registrants for each of the scheduled dates. Each Hearthside Dinner program runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wade House staff can also host private Hearthside Dinners for special groups of family, friends or co-workers. About Wade House and Its Historic Buildings
Built in 1850, the 27-room Wade House stagecoach inn is the centerpiece of the Wade House historic site, one of the Wisconsin Historical Society's 10 historic sites. The site also includes the Herrling sawmill, one of the only working, water-powered sawmills of its kind in North America, and the Wesley Jung Carriage Museum, home to Wisconsin's largest collection of hand- and horse-drawn carriages and working wagons.
