Explore the Singer Advertising Card Collection

A chromolithograph card of a group of people from "Zululand," 1892
WHI 57787

A collection of 50 chromolithograph advertising cards created by the Singer Manufacturing Company, manufacturers of Singer sewing machines, constitutes the latest image gallery in Wisconsin Historical Images, the Society's online image database. The cards depict people from around the world, dressed in traditional clothing and posing with Singer sewing machines. The images, combined with the accompanying text, provide perspective on popular representations of race and ethnicity during the rise of industrialization and consumer culture.
