The Past in Perspective: Local History and Historic Preservation Conference September 23-24 in Stevens Point

Local historians and anyone with an interest in historic preservation should mark their calendars now for what promises to be the biggest and best gathering of its kind. The Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Council for Local History will present a two-day conference, The Past in Perspective, at the Holiday Inn and Convention Center in Stevens Point Friday and Saturday, September 23-24. The information-packed program will bring together many leading experts in the fields of local history and historic preservation to lead 24 sessions and 12 workshops, plus featured speakers and tours.

Register Now and Save

Now is the time to register and save. Early birds who register by August 8 can save up to $20 on registration fees. Make your plan to attend now, and take advantage of the limited number of discount hotel rooms available at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn and Convention Center.

Don't Miss the Largest Event of Its Kind in Wisconsin

In 2010 more than 350 people from Wisconsin and beyond came together at the conference in Lake Geneva, to learn, network and share ideas. This year's conference brochure has detailed descriptions of all sessions, workshops and tours included in the program. We have packed this year's conference with educational programs to supply you with new ideas and make connections with new contacts. On Friday night you won't want to miss a free reception sponsored by the Wisconsin Trust for Historic Preservation to help you meet your colleagues and trade ideas. On Saturday morning, the Wisconsin Council for Local History is sponsoring "Coffee and Conversation," an opportunity to enjoy morning refreshments along with roundtable discussions with experts on a variety of history and preservation topics.

Special Events Highlight the History of Stevens Point

We always try to celebrate the local history of the conference location, and this year's program offers several opportunities to learn more about the culture and history of the Stevens Point area. On Friday night you may purchase a ticket for Polka in Point, a dinner that includes a presentation about Wisconsin's Polish heritage by University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor of Folklore Jim Leary and a polka dance featuring a live performance by Polka Hall of Fame member Norm Dombrowski and the Happy Notes. On Saturday you can explore more Polish history and culture with a Polish Sites Bus Tour of Portage County, the largest rural Polish-American community in America. Or you can enjoy other local flavor by taking a tour of America's fifth oldest, continuously operating brewer, Point Brewery.

Get All the Details and Register Right Away

Don't delay registering for this can't-miss event. Many of our events and workshops are limited to a maximum number of attendees, and you don't want to miss the discounted rates that expire on August 8. You can find detailed descriptions of all conference sessions and events on our website, where you can also download the conference brochure (PDF 2.79 MB) as well as a printable registration form (PDF 394 KB). We look forward to seeing you in Stevens Point.
