Registration Deadlines Looming
Don't forget to register for the September 23-24 Local History and Historic Preservation Conference. Your registration must be postmarked by September 9 to meet the registration deadline. September 1 is also the last day to make your hotel reservation at the discounted conference rate at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn Convention Center.
Additional Opportunities for Learning and Fun
The big event you don't want to miss is Friday night's Polka in Point. We are offering a special Northwoods buffet dinner to give you a social opportunity to make new friends and share ideas. During dinner, Jim Leary, University of Wisconsin-Madison professor of folklore and director of the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures, will discuss Wisconsin's Polish heritage in his presentation, "Poles, Polkas, Pluralism and Wisconsin's Culture Wars." Wrap up your night with Wisconsin's state dance, the Polka! We are excited to present Polka Hall of Fame member Norm Dombrowski and the Happy Notes. A Wisconsin tradition, the band has been playing Polish music since the late 1950s and is still one of the most popular polka bands today.
The fun continues on Saturday, after the conference. We are offering a special tour of Polish historical and cultural sites of Portage County, led by Donna Zimmerman, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and Ron Zimmerman, director of the university's Schmeeckle Reserve. Or you can choose a quick 45-minute tour of Stevens Point Brewery, the fifth oldest continuously operating brewer in the country.
To help you register, there are detailed descriptions of all conference sessions and events on our website, where you can also download the conference brochure (PDF 2.79 MB) as well as a printable registration form (PDF 394 KB). We look forward to seeing you in Stevens Point.
