Wisconsin Magazine of History, Autumn 2012
Surfing is not just a coastal activity, as Sheboygan-born twins Lee and Larry Williams proved in the 1960s. In 1988, the Williams brothers founded the Dairyland Surf Classic, an event in which surfing and paddling competitions celebrate the "Third Coast's" unique surf culture and camaraderie in an old-fashioned Midwestern beach party. It's a lifestyle the brothers began pursuing back when Lyndon B. Johnson was advocating for civil rights and Vince Lombardi was redefining Green Bay as Titletown, USA. Sports writer William Povletich tells the story behind the unlikely surfing destination in Malibu of the Midwest in the Autumn 2012 issue of the "Wisconsin Magazine of History."
Other Stories in the Autumn 2013 Issue
