22nd Annual Wade House Civil War Weekend

Union and Confederate cavalrymen cross swords during the annual Civil War Weekend at Wade House

In our continuing commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Wade House will turn back the clock to August 1862 and the opening engagement of the Second Battle of Bull Run, Brawner's Farm, during the historic site's 22nd Annual Civil War Weekend Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30. The largest single event that the Wisconsin Historical Society presents brings hundreds of Civil War re-enactors to the site for a two-day encampment and battle re-enactment.

A special guest will be President Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by popular re-enactor Fritz Klein). Listen as Lincoln provides insight on the status of the war in August 1862, thoughts on how to preserve the Union, and perspective on the perils that lie ahead. From 3 to 5 pm each day, Lincoln will be available for autographs, handshakes and photographs.

Explore the Camps and Experience a Civil War Battle

Each day visitors can stroll the sprawling, wooded Wade House grounds to meet and mingle with Confederate and Union re-enactors. Visitors can also explore Sutlers Row and the camps of civilian sutlers who shadowed troop movements to hawk wares that were not available through government issue. Each day there will be a skirmish at 11 am and a full-scale battle at 2 pm. Watch the spectacle of hundreds of soldiers — cavalry, infantry and artillery — as they meet in battle.

Before and after the battles, watch as troops from both armies conduct drills and offer a variety of demonstrations. Victorian courtship, 19th-century-style wet-plate photography demonstrations, a medical field hospital, and music of the Civil War era will be presented interactively each day. Expanded food and beverage offerings and an extensive array of Civil War items will be available for sale on site.
