Great River Road Day at Villa Louis

A section of Wisconsin's Great River Road

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Great River Road, a more-than-2,000-mile-long roadway that hugs the Mississippi River through 10 states, including Wisconsin. And one of the route's Interpretive Centers, the Villa Louis Victorian estate in Prairie du Chien, will celebrate the occasion with a Great River Road Day on Saturday, August 10. The celebration will include tours of the mansion, restored to its 1890s heyday, a 2 pm appearance by popular Wisconsin Historical Society Press author, Jerry Apps, and an evening concert featuring the father-and-daughter duo, La Barge, specializing in river-inspired music.

'Prettiest Drive' in America

The Wisconsin section of the Great River Road has the distinction of being named the "prettiest drive" in America in 2012 by readers of the Huffington Post, topping such magnificent drives as Northern California's Highway 1, Hawaii's twisting Hana Highway and Maine's sublime Acadia National Park Loop along the rugged Atlantic Ocean. Wisconsin's Great River Road spans some 250 miles of riverside highway beside towering, tree-clad limestone bluffs. Marked by green signs bearing a steamboat wheel, Wisconsin's Highway 35 passes through many quaint towns and villages, including historic Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin's second-oldest city, situated just upstream from the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers.
