Farm Book Authors Visit Winter Expos
The start of a new year also marks the beginning of the annual winter "expo season" for farmers and gardeners alike. This January and February the Wisconsin Historical Society Press will bring its farm and gardening history books — along with authors Jerry Apps and Craig Schreiner — to winter farm expos throughout Wisconsin.
'One Small Farm'
On Sunday, January 12, photographer Craig Schreiner will sign copies of his Society Press book, 'One Small Farm: Photographs of a Wisconsin Way of Life,' at the FFA Farm Toy Show in Mount Horeb. Schreiner's photo essay book follows the rhythms and routines of the Lamberty family's dairy farm near Pine Bluff, Wisconsin, documenting the challenges and the joys of dairying and providing viewers a window into a world that is quickly fading.
Popular Rural Historian Jerry Apps
On Wednesday and Thursday, January 15 and 16, celebrated rural historian Jerry Apps will appear at the 36th Midwest Farm Show in La Crosse to share the sights, sounds, sentiments — and yes, the chill — of winters on the farm in daily presentations based upon his newest Society Press book, 'The Quiet Season: Remembering Country Winters.' The Society Press will also have a booth in the show's exposition hall, featuring all of Apps' Society Press books as well as other farming, gardening and general history titles.
In early February Apps will present two seminars at the Garden Expo in Madison, to be held Friday through Sunday, February 7-9. He will present his first session, "Garden Wisdom," based on his Society Press book, 'Garden Wisdom: Lessons Learned From 60 Years of Gardening,' on Saturday at 2:15 pm. He will present his second seminar, "Plan, Plant and Harvest a Three-Sisters Garden," on Sunday at 10:15 am. All of Apps' Society Press books — as well as dozens of other Society Press gardening, farming, and general history titles — will be available for purchase at a Society Press booth in the exhibition hall.
