Valentines: Expressions of Love and Affection

Valentine's Day card with three die-cut pieces, 1895
WHI 81212

Tracing its roots to ancient times, today's St. Valentine's Day has evolved over the centuries to become a major occasion for the greeting card industry. The Society has been collecting Valentine's Day cards for decades and has many fine examples of intricate artistry from past generations. These range from ornate and finely detailed Victorian valentines to the playful, humble ones children have exchanged since World War II. This special collection of 99 Valentines provides the content of our Wisconsin Historical Images gallery, offering a visual tour through more than a century of St. Valentine's Day greetings.
