Architecture By The Book

Shearer-Christy House

Small town Victorian tastemakers turned to magazines and catalogs for the objects that would show their wealth and give them status and respect in their communities. These periodicals informed rural and small town folk about what was popular and tasteful in the urban centers of America. Many bought furnishings and decorations through the catalogs of Sears and Roebucks and its competitors. Few people today know that in the late-nineteenth century, many lavish showplace homes were built from mail-order plans ordered through magazines and catalogs. The Shearer-Christy house in Waupaca is one of many homes built from plans of Chicago architect George Otis Garnsey, published in National Builder magazine.
