Burial Sites Preservation Board
The current Burial Sites Preservation Board HS 1 (PDF, 15KB) is made up of nine members including the Director of the Wisconsin Historical Society (voting) or designee, the State Archaeologist (non-voting), the State Historic Preservation Officer or designee (non-voting) and six Governor appointees. Three of those appointments are made based on nominations from the Wisconsin Archaeological Survey and an additional three based on nominations from the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council and Menominee Tribe. Governor appointees serve three-year terms. Qualifications for each group of appointees may be found in Wis. Stats. 15.705 (PDF, 20KB) .
The Board meets quarterly and is responsible for:
- Determining which Indian tribes in Wisconsin have an interest in any catalogued burial site or class of catalogued burial sites.
- Determining which Registry applicants have an interest in a catalogued burial site or class of catalogued burial sites.
- Notifying the Director of the Wisconsin Historical Society which individuals or groups they have approved for the Registry of Interested Persons.
- Reviewing determinations made by the Director and the Department of Administration's Division of Hearings and Appeals to permit or deny disturbance to catalogued sites.
- (As necessary), reviewing disposition actions taken by the Director regarding human remains removed from burial sites.
- Approving transfers of burial sites from municipal jurisdiction to private hands.
