Registry of Interested Persons

What is the Registry of Interested Persons?

The Registry is a list of those persons or organizations who have successfully applied to the Burial Sites Preservation Board for inclusion based on their specific interest in a single catalogued burial site, or in a class of catalogued burial sites, such as Native American mounds or all historic cemeteries within a given jurisdiction.

The Registry is used for three purposes:

  1. By the director of the Wisconsin Historical Society in determining whether or not a substantial interest exists with respect to a request to disturb an uncatalogued burial site.
  2. By an individual requesting to disturb a catalogued burial site who must contact (in writing by certified, return receipt requested) those on the Registry for input on their proposed project before the director can make a decision on whether to permit the disturbance, and
  3. Prior to when the director makes a final disposition decision for human remains and objects related to those remains that have been excavated from a burial site.
