Wisconsin's Oldest Agricultural Fields
Join members of the Sauk County Historical Society, the Ho-Chunk Nation, and the Wisconsin Historical Society in a dedication and tour of the oldest agricultural fields in Wisconsin. Relic garden beds, like those at Hulbert Creek, were once common throughout Wisconsin. Native Americans built elevated planting surfaces in order to enhance soil fertility, control moisture levels, and improve cultivating conditions. The fields are laid out in intricate patterns that may express religious, political, or social beliefs. Discover what crops were grown, learn about the agricultural practices of the original organic farmers, and see examples of early agricultural tools. We will offer guided walking tours of the garden beds.
