New Collections in the Archives of the WHS

Manuscript Collections:

1. Sylvester (Pat) Weaver
Papers, 1922-1989, of television executive, media consultant, and entrepreneur, Sylvester L. "Pat" Weaver Jr. Born in 1908, Weaver began his career in broadcasting in the 1930s working in radio, eventually moving to the advertising side of the business in the 1940s. He was working at the ad agency of Young and Rubicam when he was hired by NBC as vice president in charge of television in 1949, eventually becoming president and then chairman of the board before resigning in 1956. While at NBC Weaver made innovative changes to the way the network programmed its shows and sold advertising and played a large role in the development of many influential shows including the Tonight Show and the Today Show, among many others. Upon leaving NBC Weaver formed his own entertainment company, Weaver Associates, and used it as a foundation for his ventures. The bulk of the papers pertains to Weaver's professional career, beginning with his employment as an advertising executive at Young & Rubicam in the late 1940s. His subsequent years at NBC are also represented although the majority of the collection relates to Weaver's various endeavors after resigning as chairman of the network. These include Weaver's attempts to start a fourth television network and to introduce cable television service in California as well as his actions as a consultant for Kaiser Aluminum, Nelson A. Rockefeller, and for the clients of Wells, Rich, Green, Inc. Weaver died in 2002.

2. Griffith H. Williams
Papers compiled by local historian Griffith Williams consisting of correspondence, writings by various members of the Williams family, and postcards and photographs focusing on the history of Prairie du Chien. -The writings consist of the reminiscences of the seven children of Robert and Mabel Williams which they sent to one another as Christmas letters the bulk of which focus on the decades of the Great Depression and World War II. Also included are copies of Griffith Williams' scrapbooks which detail his personal experiences during World War II and his life in the Prairie du Chien area. Additionally there is an extensive Wisconsin postcard collection as well as photographs depicting scenes and residents of the Prairie du Chien area.

3. Catherine Cleary
Papers, 1979-1995, consisting of Cleary's research for two articles published in the Wisconsin Magazine of History entitled, "Lavinia Goodell, First Woman Lawyer in Wisconsin" and "Married Women's Property Rights in Wisconsin, 1846-1972." The papers consist of correspondence, notes, newspaper articles, academic and journal articles, legal documents, and edited versions of the manuscripts.

4. Edson Sewell Bastin
Diaries of Bastin recounting his military service with the 28th Wisconsin Infantry, Company G. The first two diaries document the years 1863 and 1864 and describe his military life including expeditions, illnesses, politics, duties, and camp life. Most of the diary entries are written from either the area around Helena (Ark.) or Little Rock. The third diary is from 1870 and describes his daily life including sermons attended, sickness, politics, and personal finances.

1. Justice of the Peace (Ripon). Justice Court dockets, 1860-1916.
Summary: Dockets regarding actions taken primarily in civil cases and some criminal cases brought before the justices of the peace indicating the names of the plaintiff and
defendant, and in some cases those of their attorneys, the complaint entered, dates of various actions and proceedings, court costs, a short summary of the case, and the verdict given. The Justice office was located in Ripon and had countywide jurisdiction in civil cases where small amounts are involved, and in criminal cases of misdemeanors and petty crimes.

2. Municipal Court (Ripon). Dockets, 1861-1917.
Summary: Record of primarily municipal ordinance violations occurring in the City and Town of Ripon. Also documented are some civil actions (including divorce decrees) and
criminal matters to a limited degree. Volume 2 records a small number of admissions to citizenship, and a section at the back of the docket contains orders (1872-1877) for individuals to practice law in the county.

Summary: Documents filed in County Court concerning the settlement of deceased individuals' estates and the filing of wills. Case files typically include petitions to pursue
wills; orders appointing administrators; newspaper clippings of notices; notices to creditors; order admitting wills to probate; wills; inventories and appraisals; receipts for paid claims against estates; reports of executors; executors bonds; final judgments; petitions and orders for widow's allowances out of estate; and miscellaneous papers. 4. Lyndon (Sheboygan County). Clerk. Records, 1849-1978.
Summary: Records consisting of Clerk's general record books, 1849-1967; Treasurer's account books, 1883-1978; election records, 1868-1907; Justice of the Peace dockets, 1858-1926, and a highway record, 1868-1901. Volume 1, page 199 contains the proceedings of a special meeting held on June 15, 1861 recording the townspeople's reactions to the outbreak of the Civil War.

5. Lyndon (Sheboygan County: Town). Treasurer. Tax rolls, 1870-1910.
Summary: A record of taxes on real and personal property, including name of owner, description of property, number of acres, valuation of property, taxes assessed, and allocation of taxes to the state, county, town, school district, highway commission, and other special funds. Volumes for the years 1872, 1873, 1875-1879, 1881, and 1883-1886 are missing.

6. Circuit Court (Wood County). Record of deceased lawyers, 1897-1927.
Summary: Memorials to prominent Wood County, Wisconsin attorneys. Memorials were written by a committee of the Wood County Bar Association and filed with the Circuit Court.
