New Collections in the Archives of the WHS

Manuscript Collections:

1. Fighting Bob Fest Videotapes
VHS tapes of speakers at the 2003 Fighting Bob Fest, a "Progressive Chautauqua" conducted in the memory and spirit of Wisconsin's preeminent Progressive, Robert M. Lafollette. The speakers included Lois Marie Gibbs, Russ Feingold, Bert Grover, Bernard Sanders, John Nichols, and Jim Hightower.

2. Ella J. Campbell Diaries
Diaries of Ella and Alfred Campbell (bulk by Ella), 1868-1943 with some small gaps. Ella "Pip" Davis (born ca. 1854) kept yearly diaries from her home in Galesville (Wis.). She married Alfred Campbell in 1877. The diary for that year was written by Alfred and the diary for 1878 was written by both Ella and Alfred, and includes the birth of their daughter, Louise Campbell; all subsequent diaries were written by Ella. The diaries begin when she is 14 and she discusses school, her family, and her work as a store clerk. Later diaries include her courtship and marriage, descriptions of the couple's daily activities, family concerns, social events, and consistent discussion of the weather. Many of the diaries also include business cards, news clippings, financial records, and various memorabilia collected by Ella during the year. This collection is housed at the La Crosse Area Research Center.

3. Turnverein Exercise Book
Bound volume and loose prints of Mid-19th century Turnverein exercises (pyramids and other acrobatic formations) with some handwritten notations. The bound volume also includes some programs and tickets from Turnverein demonstrations.

State Government Records Collections:

1. Wisconsin Conservation Congress
The state archives has recently accessioned over 15 cartons of recent records of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress. The Wisconsin Conservation Congress is an independent citizens organization founded in 1934 to provide advice to the Natural Resources Board on matters concerning hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation. It is staffed by the Division of Legal Services of the Department of Natural Resources.
The records consist of memoranda, annual brochures concerning proposed regulations submitted to each county congress, voting results and analyses, resolutions submitted by the counties to the congress, committee reports, and some proceedings of the annual statewide meetings. Some issues prompted correspondence from individuals who did not attend the local or statewide meetings such as the extensive correspondence concerning hunting of mourning doves. Earlier records about the Congress are included in the Wisconsin Conservation Department subject files (Series 271) and the Department of Natural Resources subject files (Series 2550).
