New Collections in the Archives of the WHS

Manuscript Collections:

1. Edwards and Clarke family diaries and transcripts
Diaries (1874-1888) written by various members of the Clarke and Edwards family and a transcript (2004) of the diaries compiled by Jan and Jo Gustafson. The diaries include accounts of farm and everyday life in Rock County, Wis., and briefly discuss family and friends, weather, raising crops and the buying and selling of produce and meat. Also included are recipes, monthly cash accounts, and addresses. The transcripts contain additional information such as family group sheets, genealogical data on the Ebenezer Boughton family, and brief biographies and reproduced photographs of the authors of the diaries.

2. Longley Family History
Family history of Oren and Matilda Longely and their daughter Ora Hulda Longely compiled by J.E. Beasley, Susan Longely Henning and C.E. Hawtrey, describing Oren's farming near Dousman (Wis.) and work as a butter maker in the surrounding area (1876-1921), his marriage to Matilda Schenkenberg and later work with Milwaukee Interurban Railroad. The Ora Longely history includes her childhood reminiscences, descriptions of her training and work as a nurse (1919-1934) in Milwaukee and Burlington (Wis.) and Fayetteville (NC) and an account by her son, C.E. Hawtrey, of his mother from his childhood in the early 1940's through her death in 1977. The history also includes scanned photographs of family documents (1844-1969) such as certificates, wills, mortgages, land contracts, and receipts. In addition there are 15 identified photographs of staff members of Milwaukee Passavant Hospital, during the period Ora Longely trained as a nurse there (1919-1922).
