New Collections in the Archives of the WHS
Manuscript Collections:
1. Gene Boyer Papers
Papers of Gene Cohen Boyer, documenting her participation in the development of political and economic feminism at the local, state, and national levels. A leader in the women's movement since the 1960s, she was a founder and first treasurer of the National Organization for Women (NOW), and later president of the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund. At the state level she was instrumental in creating a municipal commission on the status of women in Beaver Dam in the mid-1960s, the first such commission in Wisconsin, was founding chair of the Wisconsin Women's Network and the Wisconsin Business Women's Coalition, Inc., and active in Wisconsin NOW. The papers document her many activities and interests and include biographical materials, correspondence, subject files, speeches and writings. Also included are photographs, transparencies, and sound recordings of many organization meetings and conferences.
2. Verne P. Kaub Papers
Papers, 1908-1950 (bulk 1927-1949), of Verne P. Kaub, a Wisconsin newspaperman, publicist and religious activist. Born in Michigan in 1884 and raised in Indiana, after a brief association with the Socialist Party of America in Pennsylvania, Verne Kaub settled in Watertown, Wisconsin in 1913. The collection consists primarily of Kaub’s correspondence with individuals, newspapers, and religious or political organizations but also includes newspaper clippings, pamphlets, newsletters and books as well as other printed material pertaining to the broad range of issues in which he was interested. In the 1930s Kaub’s concern focused on the influence of communism and socialism on American religion, government, and free enterprise. Much of the material in the collection relates to his efforts to combat what he saw as the growing strength of communism within the Congregational Church, especially the Church’s Council for Social Action, and in American Protestant churches in general. In the 1940s Kaub turned his attention to what he saw as the excesses and the socialist leanings of the Tennessee Valley Authority. In 1949 these concerns, among others, led to his founding of the American Council of Christian Laymen (1949-1964).
