Manuscript Collections:
1. Pew Center for Civic Journalism (PCCJ)
Established by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the PCCJ was intended to help stimulate citizen involvement in community issues by helping print and broadcast news organization's experiment with ways to reconnect to their communities and engage their citizens in dialogue and problem solving through their stories. The collection consists primarily of papers, tear sheets, video and tape recordings of prize-winning and grant-funded entries in the organization's James K. Batten Award for Excellence in Civic Journalism competition. Awards were offered in four different categories including newspaper/magazine, television broadcast, radio broadcast and online. The Pew Center for Civic Journalism shared the results of various civic journalism experiments with the journalism community through its workshops, quarterly newsletters, publications, videos and other outreach programs.
2. George Fred and William Keck
Additions consisting of transparencies and project files of architects George Fred and William Keck. These two brothers, natives of Watertown, Wisconsin, pioneered the use of passive solar construction in the 1940s. The transparencies include images of projects designed by Keck & Keck (1934-1963) and are arranged by project name and number. There is a card file index to the projects arranged alphabetically. The paper records include project files, licenses, tax returns, and other miscellaneous materials.
3. Highlander Research and Education Center (HREC)
Additions to HREC, an adult education center, consisting of materials from the Highlander Archives including interviews, transcriptions, and other materials relating to Highlander's 50th anniversary; and correspondence, administrative and subject files of staff members John Gaventa, Sue Thrasher, Juliet Merrifield, and Myles Horton documenting projects, conferences, workshops and international exchanges and visits. Also included are sound recordings, transcripts, photographs and other files related to the book, "We Make the Road by Walking: Conversations on Education and Social Change" by Myles Horton and Paulo Freire (1990). Files include correspondence, minutes, annual reports, financial records, workshop materials, legal papers, questionnaires, clippings, speeches, writings, publications, photographs, tape recordings, and videotapes.
4. Clara Middleton
Photographs and papers of the Middleton family consisting of prints, negatives, and scans of photographs taken by Clara Middleton (1852-1910), her husband William (1866-1955), and their son, Forest (1892-1990). The family lived in an apartment on 22 E. Mifflin St. in Madison (Wis.) where many of the photographs were taken. Subjects include family members, family pets, and buildings and scenes in Madison such as the old Capitol and the University of Wisconsin. There are reference scans for most of the images in the collection.
5. Barry Conners
Papers of Barry Conners (1882-1933), a playwright and vaudeville entertainer consisting of correspondence, news clippings, playbills and advertisements, scrapbooks, union-related documents, and scripts. The news clipping document play openings, reviews, and interviews with Conners. The scrapbooks consist of photographs and news clippings about performers and performances of some of Connors plays. Also included is documentation of Connor's involvement with the White Rats Actors' Union including his membership card, memorandum of agreement, union correspondence, and Conners' personal writings about the union. The bulk of the collection consists of scripts from plays and radio broadcasts written by Connors including early drafts and completed manuscripts. In addition there are photographs including images of Conners, billboards announcing his plays, assorted friends from the vaudeville community, and family members.
State Government Records:
1. Additions to Governor Tommy Thompson Papers
Four cartons of speeches, speech cards, preliminary drafts, and working files of speechwriter Peggy Dooley, have been added to the official gubernatorial papers of Tommy Thompson at the State Archives. These boxes partially fill a gap for the years 1993-1996 in the speeches received by the Archives when Thompson left office. Additional materials include briefing books prepared for Thompson's foreign trade mission and drafts of several State of the State addresses.

Summary: County Court Cases dealing with civil actions. Legal papers include complaints, summonses, affidavits, petitions, court orders, and decrees. Additional accessions dating 1909-1938 (Cases #2255-5023). About 70% of these are divorces. See inventory for details.

2. Circuit Court (Winnebago County). Index to case files, 1901-1977.

Summary: Index to civil case files and some criminal files. Entries consist of names of the plaintiffs and defendants, case file number, volume and page recorded in the Court Record, and type of case or document filed. Volumes 1-3 cover case files numbered approximately 9480-21650; Volume 4, 1938-1953; and Volume 5, 1954-1970. The microfiche indexes cases ca. 1965-1977 plus County Court cases and includes cases that are not in archival custody.

Summary: Records of naturalization cases in the Circuit Court of Trempealeau County. Records include Declarations of Intention (ca. 1852-1952), Petitions (1906-1954), Certificates (1871-1906), indexes to these records, Petitions Granted (1930-1952), and Oath Applications (1941-1953.

4. Ozaukee County. Register of Deeds. Deeds [microform], 1835-1911.

Summary: Documents recording the conveyance of real estate. Entries show number and type of deed, date, names of grantor and grantee, description of property, names of witnesses, amount paid, date recorded, and notarial acknowledgement. Deeds span 1835-1889, with a few in Volume 19 that were recorded through 1911.

Summary: Index to Ozaukee County real estate deeds (Ozaukee Series 13) noting names of grantors (sellers) and grantees (purchasers). Noted are date and time the deed was recorded, names of grantor and grantee, type of instrument, description of the property, and sometimes the volume and page number of the deed record where the instrument is recorded.
