New Collections in the Archives of the WHS

Manuscript Collections:

1. George H. Wood Papers
Papers of George Wood, a land speculator and attorney in the Green Bay area during Wisconsin's early statehood. Significant portions of the collection relate to Wood's land speculation business with his partner and brother-in-law James Prentice, Wood's journey to Colorado in 1861 to try his luck in the Pike's Peak gold rush with the rock boring and crushing machine he had invented, correspondence revealing his family's experience in Cairo (Ill.) during the Civil War, and his wife's correspondence to friends and relatives. The collection contains numerous letters from his daughters Georgia Pangborn, Candace P. Wood, Jessie Wilson and Katherine Wood during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Also included are deeds, land contracts, property maps, diaries, some news clippings, a photograph of George Wood, legal documents, and a book of diagrams and plans for the rock drill.

2. Joanne Raetz Stuttgen Papers
Research papers and photographs of Joan Raetz Stuttgen in preparation for her book, “Café Wisconsin.” As a folklorist, Stuttgen traveled throughout Wisconsin (1991-1992) and described the foods and cafes of small-town Wisconsin as well as the local traditions of food and the built environment. Included are photographs, news clippings, and six notebooks documenting menu, service and location of the cafes.

3. Frederick P. Kessler Papers
Papers of Frederick Kessler, Democratic member of the Wisconsin State Assembly (District 10; 1960-62, 1964-72, District 12; 2004-present), and circuit and reserve circuit judge in Milwaukee County (1973-2003). Documented subjects included Kessler's involvement with Wisconsin's legislative reapportionment in the 1970s and 1990s, Milwaukee County's court system reorganization in the late-1970s, his involvement with the American Bar Association, Amnesty International, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the Wisconsin Civil Liberties Union (WCLU). Also documented are Kessler's legislative and judicial campaigns, and his interactions with staff, colleagues, and constituents around numerous topics and issues with which he was involved throughout his career, including judicial reform, the environment, civil rights, and the Wisconsin state constitution. The documents consist primarily of correspondence and subject files, some published materials, bill drafts, reports and a few speeches.

4. John C.L. Andreassen Papers
Photographs and miscellaneous papers of John Andreassen, who was an archivist and one of the founders of the Society of American Archivists. John Andreassen was born in Bloomer, Wis. and studied at Tulane (B.A.1931) and Louisiana State Universities (M.A.1935). His career as an archivist began in Louisiana and later he served as Director of Administration of the Library of Congress. From 1968 until his retirement in 1977, he was an archivist at McGill University, Canada. The papers include personal correspondence, postcards, greeting cards, news clippings, will, deed, articles of incorporation, receipts and a family tree. The photographs depict John Andreassen's father's family (C. L. and Paul Andreassen) as well as photos of his mother's family (Thora Amundson Andreassen). More recent photos are of John Andreassen and his second wife Allison (Ella) Grant Fawcett Andreassen.
