The ARC is a cooperative project of the University and the Wisconsin Historical Society to preserve historical records in a five-county region. These counties are: Dodge, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette, and Winnebago.

University students and faculty, genealogists, local-history writers, and other researchers are encouraged to use the Center.

Holdings

More than 200 series of local government public records include records of ten town governments in Winnebago County, microfilmed proceedings (1847-1903) of the Fond du Lac Common Council, Marquette County tax rolls (1892-1940), and Winnebago County probate records (1838-1870). Naturalization records for Dodge, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette,  and Winnebago counties, and pre-1907 birth, death, and marriage records for all five counties in the region are also in the holdings.

The ARC holds over 80 collections of papers and records produced by private organizations and individuals. Among them are records (1857-1946) of the Menasha Wooden Ware Corporation; papers (1902-1935) of politician and business leader John Strange; microfilmed records (1890-1963) of the Ladies Benevolent Society of Oshkosh; and reminiscences of Albert Cook, a Ripon carriage maker.

Finding Aids

ARC holdings are described in a checklist available from the ARC. More detailed research tools at the Center include registers and inventories of larger collections and a card catalog listing of all holdings. The ARC also has all published guides to the holdings of the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Network Transfer Provision

This feature makes available in Oshkosh one of the nation's richest collections. Requests for temporary transfer of collections from Madison or other ARCs should be made to the head of the Oshkosh ARC.

Other Research Resources

Related collections available for use in conjunction with the ARC include: University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh archives and a collection of books and pamphlets on state and local history.
