Help for the Map and Atlas Collection
Online
Searching
Use the search box on the overview page to retrieve maps according to search all fields by keyword: titles, descriptions, place names, mapmakers, publishers, dates, and places of publication. "And" is the default Boolean operator: when more than one term is entered, results will contain all of them.
Viewing
To zoom in and out, use the + or - buttons on the CONTENTdm image toolbar.
Save and Print
To save a map to your own computer, use the blue "Download" drop-down menu in the upper right side of your screen. Select "small" or "medium" to save individual pages as JPEG images, which will allow you to save or print the map.
Citations
The map's creator, full map title, and all publication information (including place of publication, source publisher, electronic publisher, and electronic publication date) are displayed below each map in the collection.
Digital Map Format Information
Most maps were scanned in color at resolutions of 300 dpi or greater. Maps from books were usually captured in gray scale or black and white. All maps were saved in TIFF format and then imported into CONTENTdm. This generated zoomable JPEG-2000 files for screen presentation.
Rights, Permissions and Reproducing Maps
Any map may be printed or downloaded at no cost for nonprofit educational use by teachers and students, or for private use by individual researchers. Nothing may be reproduced in any format for commercial purposes without prior permission from the Wisconsin Historical Society. For more information about licensing commercial uses or purchasing reproductions, click "Buy a Copy" beneath most maps or contact us.
