Politics and Elections: Woman Suffrage
Woman suffrage played a significant role in Wisconsin's early history. The state's first draft constitution failed ratification, in part because it provided for property rights for women. In the mid 1870s, Wisconsin Congressman William Pitt Lynde introduced unsuccessful suffrage legislation in the House of Representatives. Women fought a vigorous, although unsuccessful battle for the vote in 1912, when the state legislature put a measure for suffrage up to a popular referendum.
