Using the Library Collections

Nearly all of the Library's 14 stack levels are open to the public, and visitors may browse the open stacks and use any material in the library. Materials in the collections of pamphlets, current periodicals, and rare books are paged every half-hour by the staff.

Most printed books and periodicals are arranged in the Library of Congress system and most government publications in the GPO SuDoc system. Stack guides and directional assistance are widely available, and professional reference librarians will assist visitors whenever the library is open.

Before traveling to Madison, researchers should check the Library hours for any unexpected early closing.

Save time by searching the Library Catalog (formerly MadCat), before visiting.

Because the Society Library is a public building, security is occasionally a problem. If you must bring valuables on your visit, request a locker key from the staff of the Microforms Room on the 2nd Floor.
