Organizing and Making Connections

The Wisconsin Historical Society offers local historical societies advice and assistance in organizing. The Society and the Wisconsin Council for Local History work together to sponsor meetings and programs that create a strong network of historical organizations throughout Wisconsin.

Organizing a Historical Society

Staff from field services' two locations meet with prospective historical societies to provide assistance with initial steps of organization, including the preparation of bylaws. Prospective local historical societies may apply to affiliate with the Wisconsin Historical Society. Those who successfully affiliate enter into a special relationship with the Society and receive a variety of educational services. For more information about the services go to help for local historians

Wisconsin Council for Local History

The Wisconsin Council for Local History consists of the more than 360 historical organizations that are affiliated with the Wisconsin Historical Society. The Council conducts its business through a volunteer Administrative Committee.

Regional Conventions

On behalf of the Wisconsin Council for Local History, 10 historical societies host regional meetings of local historians each year. The conventions facilitate communication among affiliated historical societies. The Field Services program assists the 10 local hosts in planning the conventions and distributing information about the meetings to historical societies in each region.

Statewide Convention

The statewide convention of the Wisconsin Council for Local History alternates between Madison and a northern Wisconsin location each fall. The meeting offers historical and technical program sessions as well as tours and special events. The Society's two Field Services offices organize and host the convention on behalf of the Council and the Wisconsin Historical Society.

Interested in attending a convention? As dates and programs become available for the regional and state conventions, this information will appear on the calendar of events

Workshops

Each spring the field services staff teams with the Wisconsin Federation of Museums to offer workshops that help local historians learn new skills and brush up on the latest scholarship on everything from conservation practices and digitizing records to exhibit planning and research skills. Dates and descripitons of upcoming workshops will appear in the calendar of events
