Local History Workshops

2008 Local History and Museum Workshops

Are you aware of the latest photo identification and preservation techniques, has your institution formulated a disaster response plan, or have you explored ways to increase accessibility to your collections with larger audiences? With ever increasing collections of museums and historical societies it is important to stay abreast of techniques that allow your facility to properly preserve your images or make your collections more accessible to the public. It is also important to make sure your facility has a plan to follow in the event of a disaster.

The Wisconsin Federation of Museums and Wisconsin Historical Society will co-sponsor three instructional workshops in April and May for museum staff members and local historians. Each workshop will be a half-day session followed by a roundtable luncheon for questions, answers and discussion.

The workshops will address disaster planning, preservation of photographs and digitization of historical materials. The workshop on photographic identification offers the opportunity to attend at five video distance learning facilities. The photographic workshop is partially funded by a grant to the Wisconsin Federation of Museums through the Institute of Museums and Library Services. Preliminary arrangements have been made for the workshops to be offered through distance learning facilities at remote locations in Beloit, Eau Claire, Kenosha/Racine, Madison and Oshkosh. Some of the workshop locations include lunch. A reduced registration fee is offered for the distance learning sites that do not provide lunch.
