Civil War Records

What We Own

The Wisconsin Historical Society has a large collection of materials related to the Civil War extending beyond the state of Wisconsin's contribution. The Society Library and Archives maintain general histories, regimental histories, personal narratives, diaries, music, journal articles, newspaper accounts, government documents, photographs, and personal records.

In the Archives

Manuscript Collections
Manuscripts consist of collections of letters, diaries, and other papers of soldiers and other individuals involved in the war effort; of Civil War era support organizations; and of post war veterans and patriotic organizations.

Official Government Records
Because nearly all Wisconsin soldiers and military units were technically part of the state's National Guard, government records document the raising, training, and administration of Wisconsin units and troops including official service records on all Wisconsin soldiers.

Visual Materials Collections
Our visual materials collections include photographs and other images portraying individual soldiers, military units, battlefields, and post war veterans' groups.

Maps and Atlases
Maps and Atlas holdings include contemporary and historical maps and atlases showing troop movements, transportation routs, battlefield layouts and other details. Noteworthy is the three volume Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (Washington, 1891-1895), showing detailed maps plus illustrations of uniforms, weapons and artillery.

In the Library

The Library has an extensive collection of published materials on the Civil War which include general histories, regimental histories, personal narratives, diaries, music, journal articles, newspaper articles, government documents and more.
