Revolutionary War and the War of 1812

Archives Search Strategies

Most early military information in the Archives is concentrated in the Draper Manuscript Collection. For specific search strategies for using this collection, visit The Draper Manuscripts.

The Archives computer catalog ArCat provides the most comprehensive method for accessing information about other Archival holdings. Consult ArCat to identify collections relevant to your research. If you are not familiar with this catalog, take a moment to review instructions included on the ArCat home page.

In an ArCat "guided search," use the search terms Revolution 1775-1783 or War of 1812. To focus on more specific types of materials, combine that general term with more specific ones. For example, to locate Revolutionary War soldier letters and diaries, combine the phrases Revolution 1775-1783 and personal narratives. For information on a particular War of 1812 battle, combine War of 1812 and campaigns. For instructions on combining research terms in a "guided search," take a moment to review instructions available on the ArCat home page.
