Artist Carl Arneson was born in 1877 to Norwegian immigrant parents in Sumner Township, Barron County, Wisconsin. As a young man, Arneson worked in the logging camps of Knapp, Stout & Company in northwestern Wisconsin. The 1900 census shows Carl as a farm laborer living with his parents and siblings in Sumner. Arneson described his experiences as a lumberjack and farmer and explained his painting in a 1957 letter to the Historical Society.
