Volunteer Opportunities

The Wisconsin Historical Museum offers a variety of opportunities for individuals interested in volunteering. Museum volunteers receive many benefits in appreciation of the services they provide, including a quarterly volunteer newsletter. Read the current volunteer newsletter (PDF, 398 KB, 4 pages).

Volunteer placement is made based on an individual's interests, experience, abilities, availability, and on current volunteer openings. Volunteers assist the Museum staff in the following capacities:

On the Capitol Square

Educational Program volunteers engage children and adults to make history come to life. These volunteers are trained in the Thinking Like A Historian educational model. Information Desk volunteers greet visitors in the Museum's lobby and orient visitors to the three floors of exhibits. Collections volunteers are specially trained individuals who assist curators with Museum collections stored at the Wisconsin Historical Society headquarters building on the UW-Madison campus. Collections volunteers also assist with research as needed.
