Presidential Debates: Nixon & Kennedy
Dateline: America's living rooms, Sept. 26, 1960. This famous television program is thought by many people to mark the beginning of the end of serious political debate in the U.S. In front of the TV cameras, Kennedy's charming manners and good looks thoroughly out-classed Nixon's two-dimensional, somber exterior. The former vice-president went home to California, surrounded himself with public relations and media professionals, and returned to capture the White House only 8 years later. The modern age of spin was born on the night these photos were taken. They are among the collections of the Wisconsin Center for Film and theater Research at the Wisconsin Historical Society.
