A Pioneer Thanksgiving
Dateline: Alto, Fond du Lac County, November 1850. In this memoir, James Pond recalls the destitution he and his family faced one Thanksgiving in his childhood, and how relief appeared from a most unexpected quarter. He later went on to fight as a teenager with the Abolitionists in "Bloody Kansas," to command a Wisconsin cavalry unit in the Civil War, and ultimately to manage the lecture company that brought Mark Twain into cities around the country.
