Pendarvis Prairie Restoration

A view of the Merry Christmas Mine
Hill prairie
restoration.
A restored prairie habitat overlooks historic Mineral Point and the
Pendarvis Cornish restoration. The 43-acre prairie
project began in 1988 in a joint venture between the
Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Conservation
Corps. Today the prairie again thrives with indigenous
grasses and flowering plants, comprising one of the
largest native prairies in southwestern Wisconsin.
Marked trails traverse the mine property and the adjoining
prairie, providing lovely vistas that recall the frontier
landscape that greeted the first settlers, including
the Cornish immigrants who built the cottages of Pendarvis.
