Every Root an Anchor
This Kettle Moraine "scary oak" grows along a nature trail in Walworth County. The tree gets its appearance from burls — a kind of tumor-like, uncontrolled growth of wood cells — that often start by insect damage, fungus, disease or physical abrasions.
