Arranging a School Tour

School group tours are available at Reed School by reservation. Programming is designed for fourth-grade students, although the the program can be modified to fit the needs of other grade levels. Reservations can be made year round. Follow the links at the left to learn more about what to expect from your school tour, then contact the site at 608-253-3523 or by email to reserve a date and time. Reservations must be made at least two weeks before your visit. Here are some things you may want to know to help you plan your tour:

  • Average tour length is approximately four hours.
  • Tour is free of charge.
  • Reed School is easy to get to, located three miles east of Neillsville at the corner of Highway 10 and Cardinal Avenue.
  • Free bus and van parking.
  • A public picnic area is located near Reed School.
  • The classroom has enough desks for up to 36 students and chaperones. Due to the limited size of the classroom, Reed School can only accommodate one class at a time.
  • A teachers guide with previsit activities and information will be provided to help you prepare your students for their visit.
  • Although Reed School did not have water on the property during its days as an active schoolhouse (a local farmer brought water to school each day), drinking water will be available during tours.
  • Since Reed School was built before the days of indoor plumbing, students will get the chance to use the outhouse with a compost toilet.
  • Students should bring a sack lunch. Students will have lunch in the classroom.
  • The classroom is elevated approximately 6 feet above ground level with steps providing the main access. A wheelchair lift is available for students requiring wheelchairs for mobility.
