Old World Wisconsin

As summer begins its slow fade into fall, Wisconsin's historic sites begin to change the focus of their day-to-day activities just as 19th-century settlers did. At Old World Wisconsin, that means farmers are beginning to think about the bounty of the coming harvest, but not before the site celebrates an Old World Wedding on Saturday, September 13. After that, planning begins in earnest for the site's next special event, Autumn on the Farms, on Saturday and Sunday, October 10-11 and October 18-19.

Wade House, an 1860s stagecoach inn built as a pit stop and lodging place for travelers on the old plank road that connected Fond du Lac and Sheboygan, will stage its final game of the vintage 1860s base ball season on Sunday, September 21, giving fans of the historic sport one more chance to see how differently the game was played during the 1860s (game times are 1:30 p.m.). After the bats and balls have been put away for the season, the site will set its sights on the Second Annual Civil War School Day and the biggest event of the year, the 18th Annual Civil War Weekend.

Across the state, nestled alongside the Mississippi River, the historic Villa Louis Victorian mansion offers daily tours highlighting the mansion's breathtaking, top-to-bottom restoration that returned the house and the adjacent office building to the elegance of their 1890s heyday. The site is also gearing up for one of its major annual special events, the Villa Louis Carriage Classic on Saturday and Sunday, September 6-7.

Circus World ends its 50th live performance season after September 1, but in the off season visitors can still enjoy daily tours of Historic Ringlingville, comprising the remaining structures of the original Ringling Bros. Circus Winter Quarters. They can also get an up-close look at Circus World's incredible collection of antique circus wagons — the largest collection of its kind in the world — and see the phenomenal exhibits inside its circus museum.
