Wisconsin on Campus
Dawn breaks in Maryland... and we are awake to see it! Greetings from National History Day at College Park, Maryland! Today we saw our state delegation come together for the first time as "Team Wisconsin." Nearly all our students have arrived, and everyone is quickly getting to know one another. From arrival on campus to exhibit set-up in the beautiful Grand Ballroom to exploring the University of Maryland campus on a whirlwind scavenger hunt, it's been a very full day. Tomorrow will be just the same with judging for the junior division and touring for the seniors, so don't forget to check in again!

Janet Yearous of Lancaster High School enjoys the opening ceremony with Rafaela Rodrigues of Antigo High School. Wow! Today was exciting! I arrived at the campus about 2:00 PM and have been busy ever since. My roommate and I decorated our door and then the Wisconsin team had a pizza party. After that we broke into teams and had a scavenger hunt. That was so fun! Then there was a meeting for all 2,000 NHD participants. Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. spoke. All the speakers were very good. I have met so many people and it seems like I just got here! Everybody is so friendly and I've traded a lot of buttons, too. Can't wait for tomorrow!

Rafaela Rodrigues and Juliana Gargiulo, exchange students from Brazil and Argentina, combine their nationalities with their newfound Badger Pride in their door decorations. Hey guys! I am an exchange student from Brazil. It is awesome being here... I actually arrived yesterday and this is a really nice campus and my first time in NHD. Today I exchanged some pins and it was fun. I met some people and made friends. I am really excited about tomorrow because I am going to present my performance but before I am going to do a tour here too.
Ate mais! ( see you )

Melanie Iverson, Kelsey Jamison, and Jennifer Mathison of Hudson Middle School help National NHD staff demonstrate the way to negotiate a button trade at the opening ceremony. Hey everyone!! Wut's up? Everything is great here. Our names are Jenna, Melanie, and Kelsey. We just arrived here today and are having a blast. There is so much to do here. When we got here we immediately began to trade our buttons. They are all so cool and colorful! At the opening ceremony we got to meet many interesting and important people. One included Congressmen Jessie Jackson Jr. He had a long, interesting speech on how important history is to our world. We also heard from an author and about her book on slavery. We also participated in a Wisconsin Delegation pizza party and scavenger hunt. It was really fun; we got to go all around campus. Members of Team Wisconsin gather in the Nyumburu Amphitheater for the opening ceremony. In the scavenger hunt we searched for many different objects. One time we even had to find another person from a different state and make a human W. Another time we had to find Mr. History [Minnosta NHD coordinator Tim Hoogland] and take a picture of him wearing a cheese head. In all, it was a great day. We all can't wait until tomorrow!
C ya!
