On this date George Safford Parker was born in Shullsburg. While studying telegraphy in Janesville, he developed an interest in fountain pens. In 1891 he organized the Parker Pen Company in Janesville. The company gained world-wide acclaim for innovations like the duo-fold pen and pencil. Parker served as president of the company until 1933. Parker died on July 19, 1937. [Source: Dictionary of Wisconsin Biography, p.280]
1865 - (Civil War) The 49th Wisconsin Infantry Begins to Muster Out
Companies B, C and D of the 49th Wisconsin Infantry were mustered out. The 49th served for just a few months at the end of the war. It mainly provided garrison and guard duty at Rolla, Missouri, and St. Louis before it was mustered out in the fall of 1865.
1870 - U.S. Weather Bureau Established
On this date the Milwaukee Office of the U.S. Weather Bureau was first established. It was located in the Chamber of Commerce Building at the corner of Broadway and East Michigan Street in downtown Milwaukee. In December of that year the office was relocated to the Insurance Building, on the corner of East Michigan Street and North Water Street. [Source: National Weather Service]
1902 - UW Winning Streak Snapped
On this date the University of Wisconsin football team had a 17-game winning streak snapped by the University of Michigan's infamous "Point-A-Minute Machine" who defeated the Badgers 6-0. The game drew over 20,000 fans to Marshall Field in Chicago. [Source: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]
