1862 - (Civil War) Battle of Fredericksburg Continues in Virginia
In one of the war's most lopsided battles, Confederate troops with superior field position slaughtered Union forces trying to pass through Fredericksburg. The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin Infantry regiments and Co. G of the 1st U.S. Sharpshooters were present but their losses were small. The Wisconsin 5th Infantry was under fire for most of the three days but miraculously escaped major harm. Berdan's Sharpshooters were deployed at multiple locations during the battle to pick off Confederate artillerymen and cover the Union retreat.
1893 - Frederick Jackson Turner Delivers Frontier Address

1917 - William Waters Dies
On this date Wisconsin architect William Waters died. Born in New York in 1843, he studied for a time at Rensslaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York before moving to Oshkosh in 1867. Waters designed the Oshkosh Normal School (UW-Oshkosh) in 1869 as well as houses, schools, churches, banks, courthouses, stores and public buildings in Oshkosh and the Fox River Valley. He designed the original public library in Oshkosh. In 1893 he won the commission to construct the Wisconsin Building at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. [Source: Oshkosh Public Library]
1964 - Parker Pen Traded on NY Stock Exchange
On this date, for the first time, shares of Janesville's Parker Pen Co. were traded on the New York Stock Exchange. For its first 40 years, the company was a closed corporation.
