1864 - (Civil War) 1st Cavalry on Reconaissance in Eastern Tennessee
On this day in 1864, the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry continued a Union expedition from Motley’s Ford, Tennessee, to Murphy, in Cherokee County, North Carolina. The expedition lasted Feb 17-22, 1864.
1914 - Pee Wee King Birthday
On this date Julius Frank Anthony Kuczynski was born. Known as Pee Wee King, he is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and co-writer of the classic song "Tennessee Waltz". He was born in Milwaukee in 1914 and raised in the dairy country near Abrams, Wisconsin. He began performing with his father's polka band and later joined the Badger State Barn Dance. Gene Autry once referred to Pee Wee as "one of the all-time greats in the music world". Pee Wee appeared in a number of Autry's films, and his band the "Golden West Cowboys" was a fixture at the Grand Ole Opry during the 1930's. He brought showmanship as well as drums, electric guitars, and special costumes to the Opry stage and helped introduce young singers such as Eddie Arnold, Earnest Tubb, and Cowboy Copas. His song "Slow Poke," topped both the country and pop charts in 1951. He died in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 7, 2000. [Source: All-Music Guide by Jim Worbois 1998]
1920 - Billiards and Bowling Allowed on Sunday
On this date the Janesville city council voted to allow billiard halls and bowling alleys to open for limited hours on Sunday. Business proprietors were fined $15 each for staying open longer than allowed. [Source: Janesville Gazette]
