On this date 26 volunteers from Sauk County departed for Madison where they became part of the First Wisconsin Infantry, Company F. By the end of the war, over one thousand men served in the Union Army from Sauk County. [Source: Sauk County Historical Society]

The Battle of Prairie D'Ane (also called the battle of Prairie De Ann, Gum Grove, or Moscow) erupted 100 miles southwest of Little Rock, Arkansas. the 9th and 27th Wisconsin Infantry regiments participated in this Union victory.
