1869 - Bertha Schweke Philipp Born

On this date Bertha Schweke Philipp, wife of Governor Emanuel Lorenz Philipp, was born in Reedsburg, Sauk County. She married Philipp on October 22, 1887 in Reedsburg and served as first lady of Wisconsin from 1915 to 1921, but chose to live in Milwaukee during those years, to avoid publicity. She was active in the National League of Women's Service during WWI, volunteered for the American Red Cross during both world wars, and was a member of the Milwaukee Women's Club. She raised two daughters and one son; Florence, Josephine, and Cyrus. Bertha Schweke Philipp died on May 25, 1954 in Fox Point. She is buried with her husband in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Milwaukee.
