On this date the city of Racine was incorporated. The first permanent settlement at the location was Port Gilbert, established in 1834. Its location on Lake Michigan as well as the addition of the railroad made Racine an important industrial center in the state. [Source: RacineHistory.com]
1865 - (Civil War) 33rd Wisconsin Infantry musters out
The 33rd Wisconsin Infantry moved from Tennessee through Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, and into Louisiana. It fought at Jackson, Vicksburg, the Red River Campaign, Nashville, Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, losing 202 men during service.

1968 - Wisconsin Delegates Nominate Nixon
On this date thirty Wisconsin delegates at the Republican National Convention in Miami cast their votes to nominate Richard Nixon as the Republican party presidential candidate. These thirty votes gave Nixon the majority over Nelson Rockefeller and Ronald Reagan and won for him the party nomination. Nixon selected Spiro Agnew to be his running mate. [Source: Back in Time]
