1864 - (Civil War) Second Day at Lovejoy Station, Georgia
Minor actions continued at Lovejoy Station in Georgia during the Atlanta Campaign. The 12th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 24th, 25th and 32nd Wisconsin Infantry regiments along with the 10th Wisconsin Light Artillery took part in this action. This was the second of three days during which the two sides faced off and parried without actually fighting a significant battle.
1916 - Donald Edgar Tewes Born
On this date Donald Edgar Tewes was born in Merrill, Wisconsin. Tewes graduated from University of Wisconsin Law School in 1940 and practiced in Merrill. He entered the service as a private in 1942 and became a combat intelligence officer with the Fourteenth United States Air Force's Flying Tigers. He logged twenty-five combat missions in the China-Burma-India Theater. Tewes was discharged as a major in 1946. After serving as president of Tewes Plastics Corporation in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Tewes was elected as a Republican to Congress in 1957. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1958 to the Eighty-sixth Congress. Tewes resides in Waukesha, Wisconsin. [Source: Biographical Directory of the United States Congress]
1985 - Arthur W. "Art" Bramhall dies
On this date Arthur W. "Art" Bramhall died. Born in 1908, Bramhall played professional football for the Chicago Bears with Red Grange and Bronko Nagurski. He relocated to Madison and embarked on a career in radio broadcasting. He was known as the voice of UW football and basketball. From 1939 to 1971, he and his wife operated Justo's Club on University Avenue (now Smokey's) and was known for giving UW athletes free spaghetti meals. He was inducted into the Madison Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
