The photos linked below span the length of Sen. William Proxmire's career. Proxmire was a maverick who helped rejuvenate the Democratic Party after World War II and succeeded Sen Joseph McCarthy. As Senator from Wisconsin (1957-1989), he became well-known for his liberal views on social issues, his fiscal conservatism, and the Golden Fleece awards with which he drew attention to wasteful government spending.
