Pictures of John Muir and his inventions
John Muir (1838-1914) grew up near Portage, attended the University of Wisconsin for a semester, and lived in Prairie du Chien briefly before embarking on the career that made him famous as a founder of American environmentalism. The pictures shown here include photographs of Muir and his family and friends, his homes, scenes associated with his life, and his drawings for the inventions that first brought him to public notice. His books and more than 100 of his manuscript letters are given elsewhere at Turning Points in Wisconsin History.
