Gov. Edward Salomon's request for volunteers, 1862
State of Wisconsin. Proclamation To the people of Wisconsin [requesting volunteers for increasing the Union Amy] ... Done at Madison this 8th day of July, A. D. 1862
Governor Edward Salomon issued this proclamation requesting more volunteers in the summer of 1862. Under order from the War Department, Salomon promised each volunteer enough money to care for dependent family members and emphasized the benefits of volunteering for the Union cause.
