Roster of Wisconsin Civil War Soldiers, vol. I
Roster of Wisconsin Volunteers, War of the Rebellion, 1861-1865, vol. I
Many records were created about soldiers during the Civil War, the most important being the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls that listed every soldier who served in every unit. In 1886, after the war, these handwritten "muster rolls" were set in type and printed in two large volumes; they show a great deal of information on every regiment and company, and every soldier. Volume I, covering the First Cavalry through the 15th Infantry, can be seen by clicking "View the Document" below; you can then browse by regiment and company, or search for soldiers individually by name using the search box at the upper left of the viewer. Volume II and an Alphabetical Index are also available at Turning Points in Wisconsin History.
