A Wisconsin railroad advertises its advantages, 1857

170 miles saved to Northern Iowa and St. Paul! ...

Investors and promoters had much to gain (and potentially lose) with the construction of railroads. Railroad companies faced competition from both rival railroads and from other means of transportation. In this 1857 advertisement, the Milwaukee and Mississippi Railroad touts its advantages to merchants and settlers.
