Discover the life and work of General Billy Mitchell

General William "Billy" Mitchell: Pioneer in Military Aviation Digital Archives Web Site

General Billy Mitchell, considered by many to be the founder of the U.S. Air Force, led the American air effort during World War I. Mitchell sought to develop an independent air force to utilize the new concepts of aerial warfare that he had successfully used during the war, but leaders of the Army and Navy were not interested. His open challenges to the heads of the military led to his court-martial for insubordination. This collection explores the life and work of Mitchell through photographs and documents.
