Wisconsin Centennial Stamp Contest Gallery
Since 1893, the United States Postal Service has issued stamps commemorating significant people, issues and events. In 1945, in preparation for the Wisconsin State Centennial a request was made to the United States Post Office Department for a commemorative stamp.
In November of 1947 the Milwaukee Philatelic Society announced a Centennial Stamp Contest. Artists needed to be residents of Wisconsin, and designs were to be appropriate for the centennial celebration. A selection of the submissions are included in the Wisconsin Historical Images online gallery. To view the full collection visit the Archives Research Room at the Wisconsin Historical Society.
Contest submissions also are highlighted in the Winter 2005 issue of the Wisconsin Magazine of History.
